Recently, my daughter asked me what a decimal number was and I tried to explain. I turned out to be terrible at it. I did start with fractions but then basically jumped to π. Fail all around.
I reset and did better the second time but it got me wondering about how Montessori introduces decimal numbers. What I found was the decimal fraction board (moving to the decimal checkerboard for multiplication and division). This seems similar to how whole numbers are presented earlier through the golden beads (moving to checkerboard for multiplication and division).
Honestly, the investigation left me feeling that part of my problem was just over-explaining.
